Melbourne Area Transition ran a fun and informative day of Forest Gardening at a Forest Garden being newly created near Melbourne in the National Forest. We were fully booked with 20 participants finding out what a forest garden is and how they can incorporate elements of an organic, edible, low-maintenance food forest in their own garden. Sarah kicked off with a talk and presentation, accompanied by Ros’s home-made apple cake! Then outside for a tour and to begin planting. Helen hosted a delicious home-cooked vegetarian lunch, cooked by Katherine, Sarah and Helen. Derby Telegraph and Melbourne Village voice arrived at different points in the day to take photographs. It was a great opportunity for those who attended to share ideas and projects beyond simply Forest Gardening and everyone went away with ideas for their own plots and for the Community Woodland and the Melbourne schools food forest project. Many thanks to Katherine and Helen for their invaluable input and thanks also to the National Forest Company and Groundworks Derby and Derbyshire for their support in this event. Saturday 14 January 2011 – 9.45 – 3pm. Photos are uploaded onto the Yahoo site.
