We need you! Whether you are a parent, and young person, or a member of the community we need you to help create the best food garden ever seen!Â
We are in the process of creating a food garden, an edible woodland, and an outdoor classroom for the use of both Infant and Junior schools in Melbourne. This is on a large plot next to the Junior School (next to Packe Horse Road). The garden now has:
Raised vegetable beds; Herb beds; a willow screen; Fruit trees; a Bug Hotel. We would like to be able to add outdoor seating, a willow arbour, Garden Art and much more…Â
Â
This year, in the garden’s first year we had a bountiful harvest. The school kitchen has cooked and served produce that the children grew themselves.
The garden is designed to teach children vital skills in growing, preparing and cooking their own food from scratch, and why such skills are vital given the challenges facing our young people. It will also be a learning resource to help in the teaching of everything from History (Dig For Victory!) to Art. The garden will be used by all the children at both schools, and we also hope to run workshops to teach such skills as willow weaving, cob-building, mosaics and more.Â
The garden has been designed by local parents and is being created by purely volunteer labour! Local groups such as Melbourne Area Transition and Melbourne Civic Society are donating some manpower and money to the project but we need you too!Â
Also we are looking for people who can offer a bit of time to be part of the core team of organisers/gardeners. No prior skills are necessary. Current members of the team are experienced gardeners and are Permaculture trained, so if you want to learn new skills, how to grow food, and learn about Forest Gardening – a type of garden that is rapidly increasing in popularity , then contact us.
- Do you have resources or a skill you can offer (eg DIY skills, garden equipment; mulch; leftover materials)?or
- Could you take cuttings or sow seeds to use in the garden or to sell at a plant sale?
- Do you know someone locally who would be able to help us, either in time or with finances?
- Could you organise a fund-raiser to raise money for the project?
